70th anniversary of the rescue of Bulgaria’s Jews

Today, Bulgaria commemorates 70 years of saving its Jews and honors Holocaust victims.

Bulgarian MEP Kristian Vigenin attended the opening of a memorial of gratitude and in honor of the victims of the Holocaust, including 11,343 Jews from Northern Greece and Yugoslavia. Among the guests at the ceremony were Bulgarian and Israeli officials and representatives of the diplomatic missions in the country.

Bulgarian Minister of Justice Dimitar Peshev is credited with playing a major role in preventing the deportations.

Later today, the mayors of Bulgarian towns which helped rescue Jews from the Nazis will be awarded the „Shofar“ prize in a ceremony at „Bulgaria“ hall.
